There will not be a regular weekly Travis County Democratic Party Newsletter today. Instead, beginning this evening through the Primary, we will be sending out notifications and alerts only.
Specifically, within the next day, we plan to send out the Precinct Convention guidelines that we have distributed in our recent Precinct Convention Informational Sessions.
Follows below is a letter that TCDP Chair Chris Elliott wrote to Rich Oppel, Editor Austin American-Statesman.
February 28, 2008
Mr. Richard Oppel
Editor, Austin American-Statesman
Dear Mr. Oppel:
The Travis County Democratic Party Executive Committee (TCDP) voted unanimously at our February 27th, 2008 monthly meeting to endorse, as a statement of the position of the TCDP, a resolution urging the Austin American-Statesman to print the Travis County polling locations for the 2008 Texas Primary Election in its March 4, 2008 print edition.
The TCDP Executive Committee's resolution reads:
"WHEREAS the Travis County Democratic Party commends the Austin American-Statesman for its excellent coverage of the 2008 Texas Primary Election, one of the most important and historic elections in modern times; and
WHEREAS the Travis County Democratic Party believes that the Austin American-Statesman provides a valuable and necessary public service in its coverage of the election; and
WHEREAS the inclusion of a list of all of the polling places in Travis County in the Austin American-Statesman's March 4, 2008 print edition would further provide an additional valuable and necessary public service as not all of the potential voters in the Austin American-Statesman's circulation area have access to the online version of the newspaper; and
WHEREAS the Travis County Democratic Party has learned that the Austin American-Statesman does not intend to publish a list of the Travis County polling locations for the 2008 Texas Primary Election in its March 4, 2008 printed edition; and
WHEREAS the Travis County Democratic Party has very serious concerns about the Austin American-Statesman's intentions in this regard; therefore be it
RESOLVED that the Travis County Democratic Party urges the Austin American-Statesman, in the strongest possible terms, to print a list of the Travis County polling places for the 2008 Texas Primary Election in the March 4, 2008 print version of the paper as part of its ongoing excellent coverage of the 2008 Texas Primary Election and as part of its valuable and necessary public service in this regard."
Thank you for your consideration of this Resolution. If I can provide you with any additional information or answer any questions you may have, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at 477 -7500 or by email at chair at traviscountydemocrats.org
Thank you again. .
Sincerely,
Chris Elliott
TCDP Chair
