A MESSAGE FROM ANDY BROWN, CHAIR TRAVIS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Dear Fellow Travis County Democrat:
I'm sad to announce the departure of Elizabeth Yevich as Executive Director
of the Travis County Democratic Party.
As you may recall, these words were written once before, when then-Chair
Chris Elliott announced Elizabeth's departure from TCDP in 2005, after her
first two years of service to our Party. We were all lucky to have
Elizabeth reassume her duties as Executive Director in 2006, and she has
served us with determination and distinction from then until now.
Elizabeth is, in a word, amazing. Her abilities and her accomplishments as
Executive Director of this organization have been without parallel. She
combines incredible focus with unfailing follow-through, and is a wealth of
knowledge about all things Democratic in Travis County. I simply could not
have asked for a better partner over these past months to help me fulfill my
responsibilities as Chair and plan for a successful 2008 Coordinated
Campaign.
Happily, Elizabeth is moving on to a job that is worthy of her many talents
- she will be the new Director of Development and Communications for
Breakthrough Austin (www.breakthroughaustin.org). For those who don't know,
Breakthrough's mission is to provide a path to college, starting in middle
school, for low-income students who will be first-generation college
graduates.
The Breakthrough program admits students as 6th graders and makes a six-year
commitment to helping them graduate from high school and enter college.
Breakthrough admitted its first class in 2002, and currently serves more
than 240 students in grades seven through twelve. Their goal is for at least
95% of their students to graduate from high school, and for at least 85% of
them to go straight to college.
TCDP's loss is Breakthrough Austin's gain, and I'm delighted for Elizabeth
that she's been offered this terrific opportunity to continue to make a
difference in the life of our community. Luckily for us, however,
Breakthrough Austin is literally around the corner from the TCDP office on
6th Street, and Elizabeth has agreed to continue working with the Party as
much as possible over the next several months to help train her successor.
I am very pleased to announce that Sylvia Camarillo has agreed to assume the
duties of TCDP Executive Director.
Sylvia is well known to many of you already, as she currently serves as the
Deputy Director of the 2008 Coordinated Campaign. Before this, she worked
on Laura Morrison's successful campaign for Austin City Council, and
previously worked extensively in the Texas Legislature. Sylvia has also
been an active member and leader of the Austin Tejano Democrats. She is a
tried and true Democrat with a formidable skill set that will help us move
our Party forward.
Elizabeth and I have gotten to know Sylvia very well over the past several
months, and her good relationship with me, Elizabeth, Garry Brown, Ian
Davis, Eleanor Thompson, the rest of the Coordinated Campaign staff and
volunteers, our Democratic elected officials and precinct chairs will, I
know, make for a smooth transition when Elizabeth officially leaves her post
on September 12th.
Please join me in thanking Elizabeth for her service and wishing her well in
her new endeavors, and in welcoming Sylvia Camarillo to her new position as
Executive Director.
Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time with questions or input.
Democratically yours,
Andy Brown
TCDP Chair

COORDINATED CAMPAIGN WEEKLY UPDATE
BECOME A WATSON FELLOW
Sen. Kirk Watson has made another generous contribution to the TCDP
Coordinated Campaign to launch a student fellowship program this fall. The
student fellows will help elect Democrats from the White House to the
Courthouse, and we'd like to thank Sen. Watson for his commitment to
recruiting and training the next generation of Democratic leaders.
Each student will work 10 to 15 hours a week from Labor Day to Election Day
and will make an impact at the precinct level. They will organize
volunteers, recruit precinct leaders, knock on doors, make calls, learn from
seasoned campaigners, and be an integral part of electing fantastic
candidates like Karen Huber, Jim Coronado, Woodie Jones, Valinda Bolton, and
many, many more.
If you or someone you know would like to participate in the program, then
please sign up below. The most exciting part is each Watson Fellow will earn
a stipend as a reward for their hard work!
Space is limited and interviews will begin soon!

NAISHTAT CHALLENGER PULLS OUT
The sole challenger for Rep. Elliott Naish-tat's House District 49 seat has
quietly withdrawn from the race he had little chance of winning. On Aug. 21,
the Republic-an Party of Texas confirmed that James Hasik, a business
security consultant, withdrew for personal reasons..

First Day to Apply for Ballot by Mail
Today is the first day that you can apply for a ballot by mail.
Who can vote by mail?
You are eligible to vote early by mail if you are a registered voter who is:
- 65 years of age or older
- out of the county during the entire election
- sick or disabled
- confined in jail, but eligible to vote
How do I get a ballot?
To vote by mail, you must first apply for a ballot. The Travis County
Clerk's office does not send out applications or ballots without a specific
request from the voter.
The Travis County Elections Division must receive your application no
earlier than 60 days before election day and no later than the close of
business 7 days before election day. If the deadline falls on a weekend, the
last day to submit an application is the preceding Friday. If the deadline
falls on a state or federal holiday, the ballot must be received on the
preceding business day.
In most cases, you must send your application for a ballot to Travis County
Elections Division by regular mail or common/contract carrier. However, if
you wish to vote by mail because of a planned absence, you may apply in
person before the first day of early voting. If you are outside Travis
County, you may FAX your application to them at (512) 854-9075.
Where do I get an application?
You may download an application from their site:
http://www.co.travis.tx.us/county_clerk/election/bymail.asp
Military and overseas citizens should use the Federal Postcard Application
(FPCA).
You do not have to use a formal application; however, an informal
application must be in writing and include:
your signature (or a witness' signature if you cannot sign);
your name and the address at which you are registered to vote;
the address to which the ballot is to be mailed;
the election date and for which election you are requesting a ballot (for a
primary election, you must state the political party's primary in which you
wish to vote); and,
a reason why you are eligible to vote early by mail (to be ligible to vote
early due to a planned absence from the county, your application must state
an address out-of-county to have your ballot mailed).
How soon must I return the ballot?
We must receive your marked ballot by 7 p.m. on election day! If you are
mailing your ballot from outside the United States, we must receive your
ballot by the fifth day after election day.
How do I get more information?
For more information on ballot by mail and FPCAs, call us at (512) 238-VOTE
(238-8683 a 24-hour automated voice-response system), fax us at (512)
854-9075, or write us at: Elections Division, Travis County Clerk, PO Box

TO SUBSCRIBERS WHO USE AOL
AOL has become increasingly difficult for independent Internet services and
presence providers like ours to work with. The AOL mail user interface has
a "Report Spam" button immediately adjacent to the "Delete" button, and not
only does this make it hard for many inexperienced (and elderly) users to
avoid hitting the "Report Spam" button, but AOL apparently makes little or
no attempt to educate its user base on distinguishing between spam and
legitimate list posts to which they have subscribed but may not wish to
read.
AOL tracks each "Report Spam" it receives from subscribers. If they receive
too many complaints from our service, email will be subject to substantial
acceptance delays or rejection by AOL's mail servers.
Each time an AOL user hits the "Report Spam" button on a post from a list
hosted by our web host, we receive a "Client TOS Notification" from AOL. If
this happens, you will be automatically unsubscribed from the list.
You are free to re-subscribe your address to our lists; however, if you
chose to do so, please take the time to use caution or obtain an email
address, such as a gmail address, from a different provider. Please be
careful when deleting messages.
