DR. MAE MARION

Dr. Mae Harris Marion , Educator and Political Activist, Dies

After a short illness, Dr. Mae Harris Marion departed to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 17, 2008. Dr. Marion was the first child born to Arthur and Luella Bailey Harris in Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Joan Taylor.

Marion, a native Austinite, was active in the Travis County Democratic Party as a longtime precinct chairwoman, precinct #126 and party organizer. She served as a local and national leader with the National Black Women's Political Leadership Caucus and helped found the Austin chapter of the National Council of Negro Women.

Eleanor Thompson, a David Chapel member who does African American outreach for the Travis County Democratic Party, said Marion was a stalwart in the East Austin community, urging people to vote.

"I don't know how we could ever thank her for the good work she did," Thompson said.

She leaves to cherish her memories: granddaughters, Sharalyn Taylor- Hargrove, Candice Taylor-Mensah and husband Bruce Blackwell, Tiffany Taylor; great-grandchildren, Troy Hargrove, Christopher Mensah, Angelica Hargrove, Nicole Taylor, Trenton Taylor, Vincent Reyes; and numerous relatives and friends.

She was educated in Austin Schools. Reared in a Christian home, Mae received Christ at an early age. She married her first love, Horace Paul Marion.

She was actively involved in her church serving as an Usher and Sunday School Teacher. She also participated in the Greeters Ministry and Platinum Plus Ministry.

She earned her B.A. at Huston-Tillotson University and Prairie View A&M University; her post graduate work was achieved at Wayne State University in Michigan. Her doctorate was obtained at LaSalle University in Louisiana. She pursued further studies at Cairo University, Egypt Kings Strand (England). Mae was an educator in Austin and Manor, Texas and Detroit, Michigan for over 30 years.

Some of the major highlights of her life were; being present at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech; participating in the March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama; her attendance at the Poor People's March in Washington, D.C. in 1968, as well as her attendance at Dr. King's funeral; and her pilgrimage to the Holy Land on several occasions.

Dr. Marion was a political activist, sorority sister and a devoted woman of God. Memorial Services will be held at David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 2211 E. MLK Jr. Blvd, Austin, Texas, on Friday, August 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 11:00 a.m. also at David Chapel. Interment is provided by Austin-Peel and Son Mortuary.

TCDP staff plan to meet at the Coordinated Campaign headquarters this Friday night at 6:30pm to carpool/caravan over to the David Chapel. If possible, please call the Coordinated Campaign in advance to let them know: 472-VOTE (8683)

COORDINATED CAMPAIGN WEEKLY UPDATE

NOT GOING TO DENVER?

Come watch as we make history in Denver. Both Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen Barack Obama will have their names in nominations, two firsts in American history!

To celebrate, the TCDP Coordinated Campaign is organizing two free events for next week.

Hillary Clinton Speech and Keynote Speech
Tuesday, August 26
6 p.m. and last until at least 10 p.m.
Scholz Garten located at 1607 San Jacinto.

Barack Obama Nomination Speech
Thursday, August 28
6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
Scholz Garten located at 1607 San Jacinto

If you are not able to go to Scholz, feel free to turn the convention into a Watch Party of your own. This is a great opportunity to meet other Democrats in your neighborhood by throwing your very own watch party. Call 512-472-VOTE(8683) if you have any questions or need any help setting up a Watch Party.

BECOME A WATSON FELLOW

Sen. Kirk Watson has made another generous contribution to the TCDP Coordinated Campaign to launch a student fellowship program this fall. The student fellows will help elect Democrats from the White House to the Courthouse, and we'd like to thank Sen. Watson for his commitment to recruiting and training the next generation of Democratic leaders.

Each student will work 10 to 15 hours a week from Labor Day to Election Day and will make an impact at the precinct level. They will organize volunteers, recruit precinct leaders, knock on doors, make calls, learn from seasoned campaigners, and be an integral part of electing fantastic candidates like Karen Huber, Jim Coronado, Woodie Jones, Valinda Bolton, and many, many more.

If you or someone you know would like to participate in the program, then please sign up below. The most exciting part is each Watson Fellow will earn a stipend as a reward for their hard work! Space is limited and interviews will begin soon!

Click on the following link to sign up today! http://turntexasblue.com/fellowship/

TO SUBSCRIBERS WHO USE AOL

AOL has become increasingly difficult for independent Internet services and presence providers like ours to work with. The AOL mail user interface has a "Report Spam" button immediately adjacent to the "Delete" button, and not only does this make it hard for many inexperienced (and elderly) users to avoid hitting the "Report Spam" button, but AOL apparently makes little or no attempt to educate its user base on distinguishing between spam and legitimate list posts to which they have subscribed but may not wish to read.

AOL tracks each "Report Spam" it receives from subscribers. If they receive too many complaints from our service, email will be subject to substantial acceptance delays or rejection by AOL's mail servers.

Each time an AOL user hits the "Report Spam" button on a post from a list hosted by our web host, we receive a "Client TOS Notification" from AOL. If this happens, you will be automatically unsubscribed from the list.

You are free to re-subscribe your address to our lists; however, if you chose to do so, please take the time to use caution or obtain an email address, such as a gmail address, from a different provider. Please be careful when deleting messages.
