COORDINATED CAMPAIGN WEEKLY UPDATE
Save the Dates!!
Fall Volunteer Kick Off
Saturday, September 6
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join us for breakfast on the first weekend after Labor Day. We will kick off our fall volunteer effort, so come to the headquarters and meet your local elected officials and candidates. Our goal is to turn Travis County 100% blue, and we need your help to finish the job. On September 6, there will be less than 60 days until the election, so sign up for a shift and help launch our fall volunteer drive!
Voter Registration Deadline
Monday, October 6
7 a.m. - midnight
We have already registered thousands of new voters, but on October 6, we will need your help for one more massive voter registration push. We'll meet at the headquarters and then spread out to locations across the county. The deadline is at midnight, so everybody can help for at least an hour after work. Our goal is to register 20,000 new voters on the October 6 deadline, so we need everyone's help on this important day!
Early Vote Pancake Breakfast
Saturday, October 25
10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Join Congressman Lloyd Doggett for our big pancake breakfast as we get ready for the final early vote push. Early voting is incredibly important because any Travis County voter can vote at any early voting location and avoid the long lines on Election Day. This weekend is the only weekend in which citizens can vote early, so sign up for a shift and help elect Democrats from the courthouse to the White House!
Election Day
Tuesday, November 4
7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
If November 4 is anything like March 4, we won't have enough volunteers. Go vote early. Take a day off work. Come by the coordinated campaign. Help us Turn Texas Blue!
The Coordinated Campaign phone number is 472 - VOTE (8683)
Campaign Web Site: www.turntexasblue.com
The Coordinated Campaign is located at 1107 N. IH-35 which is on the frontage road between East 11th and East 12th next to the CVS Pharmacy

The best way of helping our great State Representatives is by becoming a Precinct Chair. Won't you help them today?
To find out what precinct that you live in:
1. Go to www.traviscountydemocrats.org
2. On the blue menu on the left, click on "Voter Registration." You'll be taken to the Tax Assessor-Collector's web site.
3. Scroll down a bit. Under "Verify Your Registration", click on the hyperlink "voter registration."
4. On the Voter Verification page, click on "Search for voter by Name."
5. Fill out the last name and first name boxes and click "go."
Get involved now and you can help make the following happen:
-Keep all of our Democratic state reps in office while other parts of the state elect more Democrats to take back the Texas House
-Put our candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in a position to win to continue changing the politics in Washington DC!
The best way of getting involved is by becoming a Precinct Chair! Make your voice heard in how your county party is run! All Democratic Precinct Chairs in Travis County automatically become members of the County Executive Committee (CEC), which is the governing body for Travis County Democratic Party. In addition, you'll receive all the support you need to turn out the Democrats to vote in your neighborhood. With everything happening so quickly, your leadership was needed YESTERDAY!

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Each year, many of our many Democratic Precinct Chairs participate in National Night Out. This year, Texas moved this annual event from August to October --- smart move! The deadline to sign-up with the city is fast approaching. Follows is all the information:
National Night Out is October 7, Block Party Sign-up Deadline is August 25!
National Night Out, which has been celebrated on the first Tuesday in August for many years, will this year be -- in Texas at least -- moved to the first Tuesday in October. Cooler weather is the reason. So register your block party (for free materials and visits) and save the date: Tuesday, October 7, 2008. The announcement on the City of Austin website at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/nno.htm (see full text below) says applications for Police, EMS & Fire visits to block parties are due August 25.
This is not a campaign event, but it is an unparalleled opportunity for Democrats to lead and participate in highly inclusive events that allow neighbors to get to know one another better and allow candidates and office holders to drop by to visit with voters. This year will also be a chance to promote watching the Presidential debate later in the same evening. So please, Democrats -- especially precinct chairs, coordinators and captains -- take this opportunity to plan, lead, promote and/or participate in your own block, building or neighborhood National Night Out event.
Other cities and unincorporated subdivisions in Travis County also have celebrations, and the Travis County Sheriff and Constables also coordinate visits and special materials. The national website for National Night Out is www.nno.org.
National Night Out 2008
Neighborhoods throughout Austin are invited to join with thousands of communities nationwide on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 to participate in the 25th Annual 'National Night Out'. APD officers, EMS and fire fighters will join City Council Members and other City officials in attending neighborhood parties throughout Austin.
'National Night Out' is designed to:
--Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
--Generate support and participation in crime efforts
--Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations
--Send the message that your neighborhood is a safe place to live
'National Night Out' is a great opportunity for citizens, law enforcement and other public safety officials to join forces. Events are planned to promote crime prevention and drug prevention awareness and to strengthen the police - community partnership. We encourage neighborhoods to come together and send the message that we are all working together to prevent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe. On October 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, EMS, and fire fighters.
Events in the past have included cookouts, block parties, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth activities. You are limited only by your imagination. If you register your party, you MAY receive a visit from public safety officials. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a visit by police, fire or EMS because we typically have over 400 registered parties.
For the past 13 years, Texas had led the nation in citizen and police involvement. Your participation in the Austin area 'National Night Out' will show neighborhood strength, increase the police officer/citizen bond and help to make our community a safer place to live.
To officially participate in National Night Out events you must complete the National Night Out Application http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/downloads/2008%20APD%20application.pdf (descargar aplicación en español http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/downloads/2008%20APD%20SP%20application.pdf) and mail it to the address below. You may also fax your application to (512) 974-6222.
After downloading and printing the application, complete the application and return it to:
Austin Police Department
Community Liaison Office
P.O. Box 689001
Austin, Texas 78768-9001
For additional information, please contact Rosie Salinas at the Community Liaison Office at (512) 974-4900 or by e-mail at nno at ci.austin.tx.us.

CENTRAL TEXAS DEMOCRATIC FORUM LUNCHEON
DATE: Monday, August 18, 2008
TIME: 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Austin Bar Association, 816 Congress Avenue, Suite 700
CONTACT: Judy Erben at 320-0665 or jerben at herring-irwin.com
You are invited to join the Central Texas Democratic Forum for their meeting and luncheon which features a new and interesting guest speaker each month.
Program: Texas Supreme Court Candidates: Two of our outstanding Democratic candidates running for the Texas Supreme Court are going to speak at our August Democratic Forum event. With a strong top of the ticket, and these exceptional candidates, Texas Democrats have the best opportunity in several years to replace Republicans on the court. (A recent Texas Watch study found that the all-Republican Texas Supreme Court ruled against consumers in 84% of the cases last term-up from 52% in 2000.)
Sam Houston - Born and raised in Colorado City in West Texas, Sam graduated from Baylor University School of Law. As a premier litigator in Houston, Sam is extremely well qualified and is respected by all segments of the bar. Houston Magazine has repeatedly recognized him as one of "Houston's Top Lawyers" and Texas Monthly has had him on its "Super Lawyer" list for several years. (Some also say that his name has a familiar ring to it.)
Justice Linda Yañez - Justice Yañez currently serves on the Thirteenth Court of Appeals, and her life story is inspiring. She learned hard work at an early age, picking cotton in South Texas as a young girl and traveling north with her parents to work in factories in Illinois. She has carried those values throughout her remarkable professional career, from private practice to her service as a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Law School, to receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hispanic Bar Association, to service as a member of the American Law Institute and as a faculty member at the National Judicial College.
Anytime, anywhere, these two would be superb judicial candidates. And this year is a special and propitious time indeed. With Barack Obama running within 5 points of McCain in one recent Texas poll, and with Representative Noriega in a virtual tie with Cornyn in another recent poll, we Texas Democrats have exciting opportunities across the ticket-including elevating the quality of justice in our state's highest court. Please attend to hear these wonderful candidates, and to learn what you can do to support them both.
Super-Spectacular Door Prizes:
1. Obama campaign items. More great selections from the State Convention.
2. A collector's edition "FDR" button.
3. Red Wassenich's book, Keep Austin Weird - an Austin best seller.
Cost: lunch is $15.00 for members, $20.00 for non-members
Parking: 816 Congress Avenue/IBC Bank parking garage. Enter the parking garage on 9th Street, between Colorado and Congress. Bring your ticket to the receptionist on the 7th floor and you will be given a coupon to use to exit the garage at no charge.
Reservation required: To reserve your seat, email jerben at herring-irwin.com or cherring at herring-irwin.com or call Chuck Herring or Judy Erben at 320-0665. Please tell us if you intend to bring a non-member guest and if you have any special dietary concerns.
PLEASE MAKE RESERVATIONS BY 10:00 A.M. ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 14. Seating to this event will definitely be limited.
About the Forum: The Forum meets monthly for lunch to hear Democratic speakers. Membership is $120/yr. Non-members may attend, but members have priority and receive discount prices for lunches.

Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-Up
TIME: 9:00am - 3:00pm
LOCATION: Eddie V's Edgewater Grill, 301 E. 5th Street
CONTACT: Katie Burns at 691-0065 or kburns at mda.org
What is an MDA Lock-Up? An MDA Lock-up is an event where volunteers are recruited to be "arrested" and "locked-up" for an hour to raise "bail" money to get out of jail. All money raised is tax deductible and is used to send children with Muscular Dystrophy to MDA Summer Camp in Bruceville, TX. It helps one of the 650 families served in the Central Texas Area.
Local area youngsters from ages 6-21 will be able to attend a week-long camp and participate in fun activities including swimming, fishing, dancing, arts and crafts, all modified for disabilities. It is a great opportunity for the campers to be surrounded by peers they can relate to and make new friends!
Breakfast and lunch are provided free of charge at the lock-up event. What better way to spend your lunch break than raising money to send children with Muscular Dystrophy to MDA Summer Camp while enjoying a free meal?
It costs $800 to send one child with Muscular Dystrophy to MDA Summer Camp for a week in June, so bail goal is set at $3,200 for each "jailbird." This sends four children to camp! Not everyone will reach this goal, but every penny counts!
You can also send a tax-deductible donation to:
Muscular Dystrophy Association
Echelon Building 2
9430 Research Blvd. #300
Austin, TX 78759
Thank you for helping to fight neuromuscular diseases and for sending kids to MDA Summer Camp for a week of fun!

TO SUBSCRIBERS WHO USE AOL
AOL has become increasingly difficult for independent Internet services and presence providers like ours to work with. The AOL mail user interface has a "Report Spam" button immediately adjacent to the "Delete" button, and not only does this make it hard for many inexperienced (and elderly) users to avoid hitting the "Report Spam" button, but AOL apparently makes little or no attempt to educate its user base on distinguishing between spam and legitimate list posts to which they have subscribed but may not wish to read.
AOL tracks each "Report Spam" it receives from subscribers. If they receive too many complaints from our service, email will be subject to substantial acceptance delays or rejection by AOL's mail servers.
Each time an AOL user hits the "Report Spam" button on a post from a list hosted by our web host, we receive a "Client TOS Notification" from AOL. If this happens, you will be automatically unsubscribed from the list.
You are free to re-subscribe your address to our lists; however, if you chose to do so, please take the time to use caution or obtain an email address, such as a gmail address, from a different provider. Please be careful when deleting messages.
