A MESSAGE FROM TCDP CHAIR, CHRIS ELLIOTT

Dear Fellow Democrats:

Our nation has once again been struck by unspeakable tragedy, as evidenced
by the events at Virginia Tech this past Monday. I know that all of you
join me in including the victims of this horrible tragedy, and their
families, in our thoughts and prayers.

On the local front, the Texas Legislature is in their home stretch. I hope
that everyone is paying attention to the periodic legislative alerts that we
send out on our ‘activism email newsletter list’ as there have been a number
of bills lately that should be of interest to Travis County Democrats,
including a recent one that would discourage straight ticket voting. We try
to put out information promptly on this type of stuff when it comes to our
attention and we hope it is helpful to you. To sign up for our activism
alerts, please go to ‘Newsletter’ off the home page of our web site or visit
this link: HYPERLINK
"http://www.traviscountydemocrats.org/newsletter.php"http://www.traviscounty
democrats.org/newsletter.php

As always, thank you for all you do for Democrats in Travis County and
beyond!

Democratically yours,

Chris Elliott

TCDP Chair

DEMONSTRATION OF SUPPORT FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH IN TEXAS—TODAY!!! THURSDAY,
APRIL 19, 2007

5:00pm-6:00pm
South Side of the State Capitol, 11th and Congress Ave.

“For the first time since Roe, the Court blesses a prohibition with no
exception protecting a woman's health … the Court's defense of it, cannot be
understood as anything other than an effort to chip away at a right declared
again and again by this Court -- and with increasing comprehension of its
centrality to women’s lives. A decision so at odds with our jurisprudence
should not have staying power."

- Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s dissent in the Federal Abortion Ban cases
(Gonzales v. Carhart and Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood)

This Supreme Court decision marks a major step backward for women’s health
throughout the United States, and especially in Texas where anti-choice
politicians routinely play politics with women’s health. The decision erodes
previous protections for women’s health therefore endangering women
throughout the United States when they and their families are faced with
personal and private decisions regarding whether or not to terminate a
pregnancy.

Please join supporters of women’s health, freedom and privacy on Thursday,
April 19th from 5-6pm on the south side of the capitol (11th & Congress) to
raise awareness about this historic and regressive decision which endangers
women’s health and, to urge Texas lawmakers to abandon similar dangerous and
divisive anti-choice measures, such as Rep. Chisum’s near-total abortion ban
(HB 175).

DO YOU WANT TO WORK THE ELECTIONS?

Elections are the backbone of democracy, and making sure that your polling
location runs correctly and smoothly can often be a difficult job to
undertake.

Currently, the TCDP is looking for Democratic term-appointed presiding
judges. The term has recently been changed by Travis County Elections and
will be a one year rather than two year term running from August 1, 2007 –
July 31, 2008.

Please review the following requirements for a term appointment:

1.	You must live in the precinct in which you work and you will be
asked to work EVERY election that is determined for your precinct. This
includes the party primary, elections for city council, independent school
district boards, Austin Community College board, bond and state
constitutional elections, etc. In short, you will represent the Travis
County Democratic Party at party primaries, but you are expected to work, if
possible, each and every election.
2.	Even though some of these elections are partisan, such as the party
primary, it is imperative that you work cordially with your Republican
counterpart.
3.	As a presiding judge, it will be one of your duties to be able to
physically set up the voting machines. They are bulky and may be somewhat
heavy for some folks to handle. However, your alternate judge and clerk(s)
can and should help you to set these up.
4.	The integrity of the election process is of the utmost importance,
so you must be reliable and dependable in making sure you have everything
for your polling location; that everything is ready to go and is operational
by 7:00am when the polls open; and when your polling location closes, that
you return all materials to your designated receiving station in a timely
manner before you go home or attend any Party function or event (e.g.
precinct conventions).
5.	Travis County Elections requires attendance for training, regardless
if you have been trained in the past.
6.	Pay for the primary is set by the Texas Secretary of State.
Currently the hourly rate for the 2008 Primary is $7.00/hour. All other
election pay is $10/hour for presiding/alternate judges.

We are in need of Election Judges in the following precincts:

106 107 110 111 112 113 123 132 135 136 137 139 140 141 145

BECOME A TCDP SUSTAINING MEMBER!

Our Coordinated Campaigns have helped to accomplish the following:

2004 – Travis County took back three elected seats from the Republicans.
State Representative District 50, a district judgeship, and County Constable
Precinct 3 all went from Republican held seats to Democratic.

2006 - The Travis County legislative delegation became completely Democratic
for the first time since 1992, and we took back the office of Justice of the
Peace Precinct 3 from the Republicans.

There are now only three Republicans elected to Travis County offices!

The TCDP has stepped up to make Travis County even more Democratic!

If you believe our work is valuable and you want us to continue, we ask you
to stand with us and support TCDP by becoming a Member. We have two levels
of membership:

Sustaining: minimum of $10.00 per month or $120.00 annually.

Finance Council: minimum of $84.00 per month or $1000.00 annually. Members
at this level receive prominent listing in our publications and web site as
well as at Travis County Democratic Party functions along with free
admission to TCDP sponsored events.

The Travis County Democratic Party is dependent on your generosity for
everything we do year-round!

As Donna Beth McCormick, Precinct Chair of 236 says, “If you want to keep
living in a Democratic County - the most Democratic County in the state -
you will give up one or two hamburgers or sub sandwiches a month and put
your money in TCDP instead of in your mouth! We have been enjoying this
democracy in Travis County and it is not by accident! Join TCDP TODAY.”

AREN’T YOU TIRED OF HOW THINGS ARE RUN AT THE STATE CAPITOL AND IN
WASHINGTON DC?

You, YES YOU, can have an impact at the state capitol and on national
politics! Take a look at some of this information:

- In 2006, Travis County provided for one-third of the Democratic
increase in the State House of Representatives this session by electing a
100% Democratic legislative delegation for the first time since 1992.

- It’s no secret that Travis County is depended upon by statewide
candidates to put them in a position to win because Travis County is so
heavily Democratic.

- One-term Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn continues to be
unpopular. He consistently polls way under 50% in Texas. He has been
called the “least popular U.S. Senator” in the group of Republican Senators
who are up for re-election in 2008.

- Two parts of Travis County are still represented by Republican
Congressmen.

Get involved now and you can help make the following happen:

- Keep all of our Democratic state reps in office while other parts
of the state elect more Democrats

- Put our candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of
Representatives in a position to win to continue changing the politics in
Washington DC!

The best way of getting involved is by becoming a Precinct Chair! Make your
voice heard in how your county party is run! All Democratic Precinct Chairs
in Travis County automatically become members of the County Executive
Committee, which is the governing body for Travis County Democratic Party.
In addition, you’ll receive all the support you need to turn out the
Democrats to vote in your neighborhood. With everything seemingly happening
so early, your leadership is needed YESTERDAY!

Bill Moyers Journal- BUYING THE WAR

TIME: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 8:00pm
PLACE: KLRU TV, Channel 9 cable or Channel 18 regular

n the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, the government's claims about weapons
of mass destruction and terrorist ties to Saddam Hussein went mostly
unchallenged by the media. Four years after "shock and awe," how the
government sold the war has been much examined, but a big question remains:
how and why did the press buy it? Bill Moyers and his team piece together
the reporting that shows how the media were complicit in shaping the "public
mind" toward the war, and ask what's happened to the press' role as
skeptical "watchdog" over government power. The program features the work of
some intrepid journalists who didn't take the government's word at face
value, including the team of reporters at Knight Ridder news service whose
reporting turned up evidence at odds with the official view of reality.
"Buying the War" includes interviews with Dan Rather, formerly of CBS; Tim
Russert of "Meet the Press"; Bob Simon of "60 Minutes"; Walter Pincus of the
Washington Post; Walter Isaacson, then president of CNN; editor at large of
The New Republic and author Peter Beinart; and talk show host Phil Donahue.
Noted media critics Eric Boehlert and Michael Massing are also interviewed.

TO SUBSCRIBERS WHO USE AOL

AOL has become increasingly difficult for independent Internet services and
presence providers like ours to work with. The AOL mail user interface has
a "Report Spam" button immediately adjacent to the "Delete" button, and not
only does this make it hard for many inexperienced (and elderly) users to
avoid hitting the "Report Spam" button, but AOL apparently makes little or
no attempt to educate its user base on distinguishing between spam and
legitimate list posts to which they have subscribed but may not wish to
read.

AOL tracks each "Report Spam" it receives from subscribers. If they receive
too many complaints from our service, email will be subject to substantial
acceptance delays or rejection by AOL's mail servers.

Each time an AOL user hits the "Report Spam" button on a post from a list
hosted by our web host, we receive a "Client TOS Notification" from AOL. If
this happens, you will be automatically unsubscribed from the list.

You are free to re-subscribe your address to our lists; however, if you
chose to do so, please take the time to use caution or obtain an email
address, such as a gmail address, from a different provider. Please be
careful when deleting messages.
