A MESSAGE FROM TCDP CHAIR, CHRIS ELLIOTT

Dear Fellow Democrats:

What a gathering we had on Tuesday night at the wonderful home of Dennis
Karbach and Robert Brown! The turnout was astounding and the atmosphere at
this one-of-a-kind house was tremendous. I believe that an exceedingly good
time was had by all and we even managed to raise some money to keep our
doors open for a few more months.

Our work is never done, unfortunately, with respect to fundraising. As I
mentioned in a previous message, raising money is my least favorite, but
perhaps most important, aspect of my job as your county chair. I will
continue to ask good Democrats to join the Party as Sustaining or Finance
Council members so that we can build a contributor base that will allow us
to spend less time fundraising and more time strategizing to win elections.
My passion is electing Democrats, but it takes money to do the work
necessary to see that Democrats get elected. So, if you did not have a
chance to make it Tuesday night and have not sent in a contribution, please
do so and ask your like-minded friends to do so. I promise we will put it
to good use.

At the event on Tuesday, Donna Beth McCormick was presented with the Mack
Kidd True Blue Democrat award. For those of you that were there to witness
it, you couldn’t help but notice Donna Beth’s joy in receiving the award. I
can’t think of a more deserving person and Elizabeth, Garry and I were
thrilled to present it to her. So, once again, I issue a heartfelt “Thanks”
to Donna Beth McCormick for all she has done, and continues to do, for the
Travis County Democratic Party.

Democratically yours,

Chris Elliott

TCDP Chair

CONSTABLE’S NOTEBOOK BY CONSTABLE BRUCE ELFANT

Entertainer, Arthur Godfrey once observed that "I am proud to be paying
taxes in the United States, but I could be just as proud for half the
money!"

'Tis the season to file our income tax returns. The Community Tax Centers
are again providing tax preparation assistance at no charge for families
with annual incomes of $50,000 or less and individuals who earn $25,000 or
less. The 10 tax centers, located throughout Austin, are staffed by IRS
certified and bilingual volunteers and are open weekends and evenings. Last
year the tax centers helped prepare more than 10,000 tax returns for central
Texas residents who received almost $13 million in tax refunds and credits.
This year more than 6,600 residents have already filed their tax returns
through the tax centers and have received average refunds of $3,242 and
collectively saved more than $1 million in tax preparation fees.

The Community Tax Centers are a project of the Austin Community Foundation
(HYPERLINK
"http://www.austincommunityfoundation.org/"www.austincommunityfoundation.org
), a non-profit organization that provides housing, education and financial
counseling services for low and moderate income individuals and families.
They are committed to providing free tax preparation services to help people
accurately prepare their tax returns and to help them take full advantage of
all available tax deductions and credits including the Earned Income Tax
Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). Individuals and families who
earn less than $36,348 per year may be eligible for anywhere from $412 to
$4,536 in earned income and child tax credits which is based on income,
marital status, and number of children. The IRS estimates that last year
thousands of Austin families failed to claim more than $31 million in EIT
credits. These refund credits could have helped Austin families and
supported local businesses.

Information about Tax Community Center locations, hours of operation,
specific services and required tax documents can be obtained by calling
United Way's 2-1-1 or clicking HYPERLINK
"http://www.communitytaxcenters.org/"www.communitytaxcenters.org. The
Community Tax Centers are funded in part by Travis County, City of Austin,
Austin Chamber of Commerce, Citibank, Wells Fargo and Chase Bank.

DO YOU WANT TO WORK THE ELECTIONS?

Elections are the backbone of democracy, and making sure that your polling
location runs correctly and smoothly can often be a difficult job to
undertake.

Currently, the TCDP is looking for Democratic term-appointed presiding
judges. The term has recently been changed by Travis County Elections and
will be a one year rather than two year term running from August 1, 2007 –
July 31, 2008.

Please review the following requirements for a term appointment:

1.	You must live in the precinct in which you work and you will be
asked to work EVERY election that is determined for your precinct. This
includes the party primary, elections for city council, independent school
district boards, Austin Community College board, bond and state
constitutional elections, etc. In short, you will represent the Travis
County Democratic Party at party primaries, but you are expected to work, if
possible, each and every election.
2.	Even though some of these elections are partisan, such as the party
primary, it is imperative that you work cordially with your Republican
counterpart.
3.	As a presiding judge, it will be one of your duties to be able to
physically set up the voting machines. They are bulky and may be somewhat
heavy for some folks to handle. However, your alternate judge and clerk(s)
can and should help you to set these up.
4.	The integrity of the election process is of the utmost importance,
so you must be reliable and dependable in making sure you have everything
for your polling location; that everything is ready to go and is operational
by 7:00am when the polls open; and when your polling location closes, that
you return all materials to your designated receiving station in a timely
manner before you go home or attend any Party function or event (e.g.
precinct conventions).
5.	Travis County Elections requires attendance for training, regardless
if you have been trained in the past.
6.	Pay for the primary is set by the Texas Secretary of State.
Currently the hourly rate for the 2008 Primary is $7.00/hour. All other
election pay is $10/hour for presiding/alternate judges.

We are in need of Election Judges in the following precincts:

106 107 110 111 112 113 123 132 135 136 137 139 140 141 145

BECOME A TCDP SUSTAINING MEMBER!

Our Coordinated Campaigns have helped to accomplish the following:

2004 – Travis County took back three elected seats from the Republicans.
State Representative District 50, a district judgeship, and County Constable
Precinct 3 all went from Republican held seats to Democratic.

2006 - The Travis County legislative delegation became completely Democratic
for the first time since 1992, and we took back the office of Justice of the
Peace Precinct 3 from the Republicans.

There are now only three Republicans elected to Travis County offices!

The TCDP has stepped up to make Travis County even more Democratic!

If you believe our work is valuable and you want us to continue, we ask you
to stand with us and support TCDP by becoming a Member. We have two levels
of membership:

Sustaining: minimum of $10.00 per month or $120.00 annually.

The Travis County Democratic Party is dependent on your generosity for
everything we do year-round!

As Donna Beth McCormick, Precinct Chair of 236 says, “If you want to keep
living in a Democratic County - the most Democratic County in the state -
you will give up one or two hamburgers or sub sandwiches a month and put
your money in TCDP instead of in your mouth! We have been enjoying this

AREN’T YOU TIRED OF HOW THINGS ARE RUN AT THE STATE CAPITOL AND IN
WASHINGTON DC?

You, YES YOU, can have an impact at the state capitol and on national
politics! Take a look at some of this information:

- In 2006, Travis County provided for one-third of the Democratic
increase in the State House of Representatives this session by electing a
100% Democratic legislative delegation for the first time since 1992.

- It’s no secret that Travis County is depended upon by statewide
candidates to put them in a position to win because Travis County is so
heavily Democratic.

- One-term Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn continues to be
unpopular. He consistently polls way under 50% in Texas. He has been
called the “least popular U.S. Senator” in the group of Republican Senators
who are up for re-election in 2008.

- Two parts of Travis County are still represented by Republican
Congressmen.

Get involved now and you can help make the following happen:

- Keep all of our Democratic state reps in office while other parts
of the state elect more Democrats

- Put our candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of
Representatives in a position to win to continue changing the politics in
Washington DC!

The best way of getting involved is by becoming a Precinct Chair! Make your
voice heard in how your county party is run! All Democratic Precinct Chairs
in Travis County automatically become members of the County Executive
Committee, which is the governing body for Travis County Democratic Party.
In addition, you’ll receive all the support you need to turn out the
Democrats to vote in your neighborhood. With everything seemingly happening
so early, your leadership is needed YESTERDAY!

TO SUBSCRIBERS WHO USE AOL

AOL has become increasingly difficult for independent Internet services and
presence providers like ours to work with. The AOL mail user interface has
a "Report Spam" button immediately adjacent to the "Delete" button, and not
only does this make it hard for many inexperienced (and elderly) users to
avoid hitting the "Report Spam" button, but AOL apparently makes little or
no attempt to educate its user base on distinguishing between spam and
legitimate list posts to which they have subscribed but may not wish to
read.

AOL tracks each "Report Spam" it receives from subscribers. If they receive
too many complaints from our service, email will be subject to substantial
acceptance delays or rejection by AOL's mail servers.

Each time an AOL user hits the "Report Spam" button on a post from a list
hosted by our web host, we receive a "Client TOS Notification" from AOL. If
this happens, you will be automatically unsubscribed from the list.

You are free to re-subscribe your address to our lists; however, if you
chose to do so, please take the time to use caution or obtain an email
address, such as a gmail address, from a different provider. Please be
careful when deleting messages.
