TCDP Passes Resolution In Support of Sheriff Sally Hernandez’s ICE Policy

Resolution in Support of Sheriff Sally Hernandez’s ICE Police

WHEREAS:
On April 30, 2014, the Travis County Democratic Party’s County Executive
Committee called on the Travis County Sheriff’s Office to opt out of the “Secure
Communities” program;

WHEREAS:
Sheriff Sally Hernandez won the Democratic Nomination for Travis County
Sheriff in a four-way election with over 50% of the vote, avoiding a runoff;

WHEREAS:
Sheriff Sally Hernandez received media attention for her ICE Policy and her
opponent named her “Sanctuary Sally” during the General Election and was
subsequently elected with over 60% of the vote in Travis County on November 8,
2016;

WHEREAS:
The citizens of Travis County must be confident that local law enforcement is
focused on public safety;

WHEREAS:
Multiple Federal District Courts have determined ICE detainer requests to be
unconstitutional and in violation of due process;

WHEREAS:
Sheriff Sally Hernandez took the oath of office to preserve, protect and defend the
Constitution of the United States and the laws of the State of Texas on January 1,
2017;

WHEREAS:
Sheriff Sally Hernandez implemented an ICE policy effective February 1, 2017
that complies with all Texas and Federal laws and continues to cooperate with ICE
by honoring valid arrest warrants;

WHEREAS:
The Travis County Democratic Party shares Sheriff Sally Hernandez principles
that Travis County will not allow fear and misinformation to be guiding principles;

WHEREAS:
The Travis County Democratic Party recognizes that neither the President of the
United States nor the Governor of Texas have the authority to suddenly cut off
funds to some ill-defined community called a “sanctuary community”;

WHEREAS:
Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick have
threatened Sheriff Sally Hernandez, who was democratically elected to represent
the values of Travis County, by removing state funding and seeking a law to
remove Sheriff Sally Hernandez from office;

WHEREAS:
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has cut 1.5 million dollars in grant funding from
Travis County, thereby adversely harming members of our community and has put
our public safety at risk;

WHEREAS:
Travis County residents and voters pride themselves on doing what is best for our
community in the face of threats by State and Federal Elected Officials.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
The Travis County Democratic Party’s County Executive Committee strongly
supports Sheriff Sally Hernandez’s ICE Policy that she has enacted;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
The Travis County Democratic Party’s County Executive Committee rebukes the
threats made by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan
Patrick to remove any democratically elected official;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
The Travis County Democratic Party’s County Executive Committee will take
appropriate action against any efforts to remove a Public Official that was elected
by the people of Travis County;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
The Travis County Democratic Party’s County Executive Committee demands that
Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick reestablish
state grant funding.
