Texas Voter ID Law Blocked

BREAKING NEWS:
The Texas Voter ID law has been blocked—Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott, Atty. Gen. Ken Paxton and
Texas Republicans’ losing streak in the Courts continues!

Today, the conservative-leaning Federal 5th Circuit Court of Appeals just ruled that Texas’s Voter ID law (Senate
Bill 14) violates the Voting Rights Act and concluded it was discriminatory against minorities, such as African-Americans, Latinos, elderly, disabled and rural Texans. Experts testified that more than
600,000
Texans lacked the identification required by SB 14.

Thank you to our amazing Travis County Delegation in the Texas Legislature for fighting to ensure access to the
ballot for all Texans. We also want to send a thank you to attorney Chad Dunn and the rest of the legal team for their amazing work in helping to bring this action forward.

What does this mean for November? It is unclear because the 5th Circuit has remanded the case to the District Court
to consider the proper remedy.

Notwithstanding, there should be some changes benefiting the people of Texas this fall because certain discriminatory elements of

the law must be changed before the November election. So, stay tuned!

Sincerely,
Vincent Harding, Chair
Travis County Democratic Party
