Patriotic Democrats: Have Fun On The Fourth!
Fellow Democrats,
Happy Almost Fourth of July!
How will you celebrate America’s Birthday? Will you have a backyard cookout? Attend one of the many neighborhood parades? Watch fireworks on TV this year because the drought has claimed ours?
I hope you are planning a safe and happy July 4th. And I hope you will be thankful for the freedom we have in this country, the responsibility and privileges we have as a democracy.
I’m heading out to one of our great public assets here in Texas, Big Bend National Park. Just glad that Rick Perry hasn’t figured out how to privatize it yet.
As Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell says in today’s “On the Record with Diane Holloway,” Democrats “don’t play second fiddle to anyone” in our love of country and its hard-working people.
We are the party that fought hard against hypocritical Republicans in the State Legislature to try and maintain adequate funding for public and higher education, for reproductive rights for women, for civil rights for all, for health care (including services for our veterans), for good-paying jobs and for the preservation of the environment. It has been an ugly battle.
As you celebrate July 4th, I hope you will rededicate yourself to helping elect politicians who reflect your beliefs all across Texas. Without your help, we will never be able to fully fund public schools, allow people to marry the spouse of their choice (as New York just did) or protect and improve our natural environment in Texas.
We have a long road ahead of us to complete the very important tasks of winning the 2012 elections, electing a Democratic Governor in 2014 and keeping Travis County blue. It is imperative that we plan and work now toward our goals.
Here are a few red-white-and-BLUE suggestions:
If you haven’t already joined the TCDP, please sign up and VOLUNTEER. We have plenty to do to get ready for 2012.
In order to keep our party active, please DONATE to TCDP’s ongoing efforts on behalf of our hard-working elected officials, leaders and activists. We need your help to fight against corporations taking advantage of the Citizens United case and dumping their money into the wrong side of elections.
If you are not already a member of a DEMOCRATIC CLUB, consider joining one — or invite a friend to come with you. You can find one on our list that meets your interests or meets in your neighborhood. Check our CALENDAR for meeting dates and locations and for volunteer opportunities every week.
As always, thank you for your support, and I look forward to working with you in the months ahead.
Sincerely,
Andy Brown
